The first oil filters were introduced in the early 1920s (invented by Ernest Sweetland and called "Purolator", meaning "later pure oil"). Many designs of filters have been offered as optional and aftermarket equipment for decades, but only began to appear as standard equipment in the 1950s. These tools solved the problem of contamination and allowed for [relatively] long operating times for each oil change. In the mid-1960s, petrochemicals and filter technology were advanced enough to change at intervals of more than 4,000 miles. The original Canister oil filter was replaced by "rotating" filters with the exception of a few British sports cars, which suffered from lack of development funds. Rotary filters are nowadays commonly used.
Today's engines are so clean that the 10,000-mile oil change interval is considered normal, but the filter's function has not changed. You must do your job well, or the engine may suffer significant damage. It works like this:
The outside of the filter is a metal box with a sealing gasket that allows it to be held firmly on the motor's coupling surface. The base of the kettle holds the gasket and is pierced with holes around the inside of the gasket. A central bore is threaded to secure the oil filter assembly to the engine block. Inside the box is the filter material, most often made of synthetic fiber. The engine oil pump delivers the oil directly to the filter, where it enters through holes in the perimeter of the system board.
